Gurglers (Westport Style)

We love fishing gurglers. Nothing beats the thrill of the moment when a fish explodes on a gurgler. Maybe it’s the contrast. We generally fish gurglers slow and twitchy. It’s a very peaceful presentation. Then – BOOM! Noise and water everywhere. To quote a friend: “a fish caught on a gurgler is worth five fish caught any other way.” We agree.

Twiggy

This fly caught more fish for us over the last few seasons than any other fly – hands down. It’s a gurgler variation that we originally designed for albies feeding on bay anchovies. We wanted a narrower profile, so we cut the foam thinner. And we wanted a two-tone foam top, so we made a foam sandwich. On its first voyage, this fly caught an albie while blind casting. Since then, it’s worked on every species, everywhere. We like it and use it so much, we’re putting 4 in the box. You don’t want to run out of this one.

Bobby Orr

This is a variation on the Twiggy for low-light conditions. The black belly makes it more visible to the fish; the yellow top makes it more visible to the angler. We use this a lot early and late in the day. 2 per box.

Liz Lemon

All yellow. We saw a study somewhere that said that yellow is the color that striped bass see best. Must be right – this fly gets attention. We use this when it’s overcast, or when the water is a little cloudy. 2 per box.

Katy Perry

Purple and white. Does Katy Perry like purple? We don’t know. Somehow she popped into our heads and the name just stuck. Anyway, this color combination seems to work on fish when they’re being a little fussy. 1 per box.

Ballerina

Sparkly pink. Does the fish think it’s a squid? A shrimp? Or a Dollar Store party crown fashioned into a fly? I guess they bite it to find out. 1 per box.
